IVF treatment

The ovaries are stimulated to develop more than the one egg that usually matures in the monthly cycle. This is done by hormone injections.

The dose needed is set individually.

The timing of the egg collection is determined by monitoring the growth of the follicles with ultrasound.

The eggs are extracted by using ultrasound guidance to pass a long thin needle through the vaginal wall. Due to the stimulation, the ovaries are just next to the vaginal wall. Once the eggs have been collected and the man has produced a sperm sample, fertilisation takes place in the laboratory. The fertilised eggs, or embryos, are transferred to the womb two days after the egg collection.
