Research
Aagaards Klinik is an innovative clinic, focusing on research as well as treatment.
And that is why our diagnostic equipment meets the highest standards. Our most recent acquisition is an ultrasound scanner (Voluson 730 3D/4D), which allows us to carry out the most advanced ultrasonography, such as ultrasound scans for nuchal translucency and of the nasal bone (Down’s syndrome) of a foetus at 12 to 13 weeks of pregnancy, and scans for malformations at 18 to 21 weeks.
Ongoing research project:
”Possible effects of acupuncture on hot flushes and night sweats in menopausal women”
Using hormone replacement treatment (HRT) has a number of disadvantages. There is an increased risk of developing harmful clots in the deep veins and lungs. The risk of developing breast cancer is higher as well. Due to new information on these risks, the Danish Medicines Agency no longer recommends the use of hormones as the primary choice for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
Many women experience hot flushes and night sweats during the menopause, but HRT is no longer advisable, except in very severe cases.
Literature about complementary and alternative medicine abounds; unfortunately documentation of the effects of these therapies is scant, or non-existing. One of the therapies that have become increasingly accepted in recent years is acupuncture, as a remedy to treat pain and nausea.
In gynaecology, acupuncture has been used as relief for painful periods. But studies of the effects of acupuncture on quality of life and hormonal levels are still few and far between.
That is the reason why our clinic has launched a project in cooperation with ViFAB, a knowledge and research centre for alternative medicine under the Danish Ministry of Health, to study the effect of acupuncture on hot flushes/sweats during menopause.
